Medical Tourism

What is Medical Tourism

What Is It?

Medical tourism refers to people traveling to a country other than their own to obtain medical treatment. This usually refers to those who travel from less-developed countries to major medical centers in highly developed countries for treatment unavailable at home. However, in recent years, it may equally refer to those from developed countries who travel to developing countries for comparable medical treatment that is priced significantly lower than in their home country.

Originally, medical tourism was for medical procedures and chronic disease treatments. Now, however, all types of health care are accessible, including alternative medicine, convalescent care, and even pharmaceuticals.

Why is Medical Tourism growing in the United States?

Medical tourism provides patients with the opportunity to receive top quality medical services in foreign countries at lower prices than in their home country. In 2016, approximately 1,500,000 Americans traveled out of the country for healthcare procedures and treatments.

The United States has 78 million people who were born in the Baby Boom generation, and the younger members of this group are now turning 60 years old. As people age, their demands for health care services rise proportionately. Many Baby Boomers have inadequate medical insurance or do not have any at all. Meanwhile, medical costs are going up much faster than the rate of inflation. These trends make medical tourism an increasingly more attractive option for United State patients, especially those that are uninsured and underinsured.

Why should your organization consider offering Medical Tourism options?

Over the past decade, the medical tourism industry has experienced significant growth and companies like IMSS are emerging to help people in developed countries obtain health care services in developing countries while providing considerable savings to organizations and individuals. This is due to a convergence of factors in both developed and developing countries:

  • Aging populations in developed countries
  • Rising health care costs and/or long waiting periods in developed countries
  • Inadequate health insurance coverage in developed countries
  • Technological and care standard upgrades in developing countries
  • Relatively lower medical costs in developing countries
  • Added value of leisure and tourist activities in addition to receiving medical care
  • Relatively low cost of travel to developing countries

Why Medical Tourism with IMSS?

IMSS develops medical tourism programs that contain detailed processes and protocols unique to each disease or medical procedure a program is attempting to address.

Every Detail Checked

IMSS specializes in securing services for all patients to complete their journey to wellness in luxury. Each program is all encompassing –from researching the best locale and partnering with accredited physicians, healthcare professionals, and facilities to ensure the highest quality care, to proactively facilitating complete care during the recovery process, and customizing the patient’s journey to comprehensively address their individual needs. All details are handled by our healthcare professionals including transferring medical records, facilitating in-advance virtual or in-person meetings with healthcare providers, arranging all transportation and accommodation, ensuring the best recovery care, and staying in touch with patients to cover all follow-up needs after they return home.

Every Point Overseen

The team at IMSS has over 64 years of experience in healthcare and hospitality, along with a certification from the Medical Tourism Association. Anyone looking for care abroad can rest assured that the IMSS team is dedicated to the health, comfort, and recovery of the patient.

IMSS works with fully Joint Commission International accredited hospitals whenever possible. The price of the treatment programs to organizations and individuals are all-inclusive with all program services and medical treatments bundled into the price. (Please note, the all-inclusive price does not include the patient’s visits and services provided by their local US-based physician.) Financial arrangements, including necessary deposits, will be finalized before travel itineraries are booked and before the client is admitted to the medical facility. IMSS works directly with the client's insurance provider to determine in advance whether a portion of the treatment or the entire costs and related expenses will be covered.

We offer complete, luxury medical concierge services for all medical tourism candidates looking for the best care and peace of mind for a worry-free experience. Whether clients are looking for a way to relax while taking care of medical needs, a way to find the best doctor or surgeon, a way to expedite the pace of care by avoiding waiting lists, a way to reduce costs, or simply, a way to get a second opinion from a qualified expert outside of your local area, IMSS has a service that can meet your needs.

Our Promise to You

To ensure the highest levels of customer service, IMSS will contract with the premier medical facilities and service providers in foreign countries. We’ll also employ executive travel coordinators who will arrange for the client’s transportation and lodging needs, and help the client to secure medical visas and comply with other travel-related formalities. Case managers with a background in nursing will work with each client, and the client’s U.S. based doctors, as well as, coordinate and schedule the treatment with IMSS’s network of health
care providers abroad.
